Healthcare Assistant

The main requirements of the HCA are:
• To work as part of a multi professional team, supporting and delivering patient care
• To assist the Registered Nurse in the delivery of care to all patients, to support activities of daily living including the physical, emotional and social needs of the residents, in a caring, kind and respectful manner, preserving dignity and self-respect at all times
• To be able to demonstrate good communication skills and be able to relay basic information regarding resident’s condition, treatments and interventions to relevant members of the care team, residents and relatives as directed by the Registered Nurse.

Principle accountabilities and activities
• To provide the highest standards of holistic care and attention for the residents.
• To act as a key worker for a group of residents under the guidance of a Registered Nurse.
• To participate fully in the overall care of the residents.
• To assist with washing, dressing, toileting and personal hygiene as per the care plan.
• To assist with dietary and nutritional needs.
• To assist in maintaining safe levels of care and ensuring safe practice.
• To help provide essential physical and mental stimulation by participating in recreational and social activities with residents individually or in a group.
• To assist in maintaining accurate records in accordance with registration and legal requirements.
• To carry out instructions by senior staff in an efficient and conscientious manner.
• To attend staff training, staff meetings and mandatory training.
• To report any accidents relating to staff and/or residents as per procedures.
• To ensure that the company policy on confidentiality is upheld.
• To be respectful and courteous when dealing with colleagues, relatives and other public and professional people.
• To be prepared to undertake any aspects of care or non-caring duties as requested by the nurse in charge.
• To assist and facilitate in the welcoming and training of new staff members.
• To assist in the maintenance of a safe and healthy working environment by ensuring adherence to the Company Health & Safety and Welfare policies and procedures.
• Duty to ‘whistleblow’ if witness bad practice or harm to a resident within the care home (see policy in handbook).

Qualifications, training and experience
• To have worked in a similar caring background
• Preferably attainted NVQ Level 1 or equivalent although not essential
• Attend mandatory training as appropriate
• Participate in the process of self evaluation and individual performance review with the Matron at least once a year
• Good communication skills
• Ability to work within a team environment

Environment
All staff should bear in mind the overall objectives of the care home, namely that residents will be encouraged to maintain independence and choice in a homely environment which promotes excellent customer relationships.
